Nov 25 Shares in Enegi, the Manchester-based company searching for oil and gas in the Canadian province of Newfoundland, rose 13 per cent after it announced it has encountered both oil and gas at one of its wells.

Dec 3  The Manchester-based Co-operative Group says it has become the country’s first retail to have a micro-hydro-powered store. The group is powering its food store in New Mills, Derbyshire, from the fast-flowing waters of the river Goyt. Chris Shearlock, sustainable development manager at The Co-op, said: “In addition to buying the hydro electricity for our food store in New Mills, The Co-operative’s family of businesses have worked together to support the innovative scheme, with a grant from The Co-operative Fund to help with the establishment of community-ownership and The Co-operative Bank helping with commercial finance. We are also planning to extend this support to further micro-hydro schemes across the country.”

Nov 27  The UK could meet its ambitious pledge to slash greenhouse gas pollution even if ministers give the go-ahead to expanding Heathrow airport, the government's leading climate change adviser has signalled. When asked about it Lord Turner, chairman of the independent Climate Change Committee, told the Guardian that it would be possible for aviation to be expanded while still meeting the target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by the middle of this century, especially if airlines were able to use biofuels or other low-carbon power sources.

The massive roof of the Vatican's "Nervi Hall," where popes hold general audiences and concerts are performed, has been covered with 2,400 photovoltaic panels -- but they will not be visible from below, leaving the Vatican skyline unchanged.

Nov 28 BBC QUOTE Leaders from the world's religious traditions have signed a manifesto urging tough action on climate change. Around 1,000 delegates are meeting at the Interfaith Climate Summit in Uppsala, Sweden, at the invitation of the Swedish church. The manifesto, signed by 30 religious leaders, calls for "rapid and large emission cuts in the rich world". It argues in favour of a reduction in carbon emissions of at least 40% by the year 2020.

Dec 1  DIrect Quote- EU to exceed air pollutant limit due to growth in road transport Despite significant emission reductions in recent years, only 11 EU Member States expect to remain within their emission limits for all four air pollutants set by the EU National Emission Ceilings Directive (NEC Directive). The nitrogen oxides ceiling remains the most difficult to comply with. This is partly due to the fact that demand for road transport has grown faster than anticipated.

Green pressure groups denounced the deal as capitulation to the powerful car lobby led by Germany. But EU officials, MEPs and European governments hailed the agreement as a breakthrough in a crucial part of the EU's ambitious climate change package."



Dec 1 Anglo American is "delighted" to provide its full support as a Founding Member of the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute (“GCCSI”) which was launched this week. The Institute will be administered and funded by the Australian Government and is an important global initiative which aims to facilitate the development and deployment of carbon capture and storage projects.

Dec 1  THE UNFCCC has suspended Norways' DNV,  one of the largest auditors of "clean energy" projects under Kyoto Protocol, for five "non-conformities" relating to its practices. The U.N. had performed a spot check of the company's operations in early November. its clients, which include project developers EcoSecurities and Trading Emissions.

December 2 2008: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for increased investment in a plant breeding technique that uses radiation to produce improved high-yielding plants that adapt to harsh climate conditions and that could therefore contribute to the fight against hunger.

Dec 2  HSBC has cut its lending to oil palm developers and logging companies in Malaysia and Indonesia because of  environmental concerns. Following criticism by the Forest Peoples Program, an indigenous rights' group, over its failure to disclose the names of its palm oil industry clients,  the bank would terminate relationships with forestry companies having questionable environmental practices.

Dec 3  QUOTE Ash Grove Texas LP, a part of Ash Grove Cement, recently sued Dallas and other North Texas cities to stop them from favoring cement companies that use dry process kilns that emit less pollution than old-style wet process kilns, the Dallas Morning News reports.The company, which only has wet process kilns, contends that the cities’ “green cement” resolutions violate the company’s constitutional rights, as well as Texas laws on competitive bidding for public contracts.

Dec 4  Bank of America will phase out financing for companies that practice mountaintop removal coal mining.  The policy change comes the day after the Environmental Protection Agency — at the instruction of the Bush administration — approved a rule that will make it easier for coal companies to dump waste from mountaintop removal mining operations into streams and valleys.

Dec 6  South Africa's state electricity company, ESKOM, has nixed a planned nuclear power station.

November 2008: The Bureau of the 38th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is scheduled to convene from 24-25 November 2008, at World Meteorological Organization (WMO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. This will be the first meeting of the new Bureau of the IPCC, which was elected during the 29th IPCC session, which met from 31 August-4 September 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland.
