3 The Manchester-based Co-operative Group says it has
become the country’s first retail to have a micro-hydro-powered
store. The group is powering its food store in New Mills, Derbyshire,
from the fast-flowing waters of the river Goyt. Chris Shearlock,
sustainable development manager at The Co-op,
said: “In addition to buying the hydro electricity for our food
store in New Mills, The Co-operative’s family of businesses have
worked together to support the innovative scheme, with a grant from
The Co-operative Fund to help with the establishment of
community-ownership and The Co-operative Bank helping with commercial
finance. We are also planning to extend this support to further
micro-hydro schemes across the country.”

27 The UK could meet its ambitious pledge to slash
greenhouse gas pollution even if ministers give the go-ahead to
expanding Heathrow airport, the government's leading climate change
adviser has signalled. When asked about it Lord Turner, chairman of
the independent Climate Change Committee, told the Guardian that it
would be possible for aviation to be expanded while still meeting the
target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by the middle of
this century, especially if airlines were able to use biofuels or
other low-carbon power sources.

Wednesday with the activation of a new solar energy system to power
several key buildings and a commitment to use renewable energy for 20
percent of its needs by 2020. The massive roof of the Vatican's
"Nervi Hall," where popes hold general audiences and
concerts are performed, has been covered with 2,400 photovoltaic
panels -- but they will not be visible from below, leaving the

traditions have signed a manifesto urging tough action on climate
change. Around 1,000 delegates are meeting at the Interfaith
Climate Summit in Uppsala, Sweden, at the invitation of the Swedish
church. The manifesto, signed by 30 religious leaders, calls for
"rapid and large emission cuts in the rich world". It
argues in favour of a reduction in carbon emissions of at least 40%
by the year 2020.

growth in road transport Despite significant emission reductions in
recent years, only 11 EU Member States expect to remain within their
emission limits for all four air pollutants set by the EU National
Emission Ceilings Directive (NEC Directive). The nitrogen oxides

called for increased investment in a plant breeding technique that
uses radiation to produce improved high-yielding plants that adapt to
harsh climate conditions and that could therefore contribute to the
fight against hunger.

has cut its lending to oil palm developers and logging companies in
Malaysia and Indonesia because of environmental concerns.
Following criticism by the Forest Peoples Program, an

environmental practices.

3 QUOTE Ash Grove Texas LP, a part of Ash Grove
Cement, recently sued Dallas and other North Texas cities to stop
them from favoring cement companies that use dry process kilns that
emit less pollution than old-style wet process kilns, the Dallas
Morning News reports.The
company, which only has wet process kilns, contends that the
cities’ “green cement” resolutions violate the company’s
constitutional rights, as well as Texas laws on competitive bidding
for public contracts.

of America will phase out financing for companies that practice
mountaintop removal coal mining. The policy change comes the
day after the Environmental Protection
Agency — at the instruction of the Bush administration — approved a
rule that will make it easier for coal companies to dump waste from

on Climate Change (IPCC) is scheduled to convene from 24-25 November
2008, at World Meteorological Organization (WMO) headquarters in
Geneva, Switzerland. This will be the first meeting of the new Bureau
of the IPCC, which was elected during the 29th IPCC session, which
met from 31 August-4 September 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland.
