Dear all,
welcome
to another “in-between” email bulletin of Manchester Climate
Fortnightly. The next MCFly, issue 24, will be published on Sunday
May 17th.
We
will have more information on the Environment Commission, which meets
this Thursday, and also will report on the exciting appointment of a
Manchester City Council “Director of Environmental Strategy.” Plus all
the usual activist/campaigning group news, business news
etc.
The big news this issue is that Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, is coming to Manchester this Friday.
Friday 15th May Ed Miliband in Chorlton!

Budding Bike
Scrapping Scheme
The UK's Environmental Transport Association (ETA) is proposing a ‘pounds-for-pedals’ scheme to give cyclists UK£100 to spend on a new bicycle – which in contrast to car scrapping grants – the traded-in bikes would not be destroyed, but shipped to low-income countries to be re-furbished and re-used. Director at the ETA, Andrew Davis said, “This would be a boost for the economy, but unlike the ‘cash-for-clunkers’ car scheme, a grant for cyclists would be environmentally friendly.” Support the scheme online:

“Platform 2 is a fantastic opportunity for 18-25 year olds who wouldn’t be able to fund their own trip abroad, to go on a free 10 week trip to a developing country to work on community led projects. When they come back they are trained to express their experience to their peers, community and contacts in whatever way they want. It is Government funded and run by Christian aid with BUNAC and Islamic Relief. The project is an opportunity to live and work in a poor community in a country like Ghana, South Africa, Peru or India.
The next Platform2 deadline is just 3 weeks away so if you, or someone you know, are interested in getting involved then please get them to apply as soon as possible. All the information that you need is on our website www.myplatform2.com .”
